Segregation at source in Aizawl’s wards
Two-bin collection and a composting yard in six wards, designed with the ward committees before a single bin is bought.
Why this work
Aizawl generates more waste than its single dumping ground can take, and the ground is on a slope above a stream. Mixed waste is the reason nothing downstream of collection works: nothing can be composted, little can be recycled, and the whole volume goes to the same place.
Segregation at source is the only intervention that changes the volume rather than moving it. It also fails more often than it works, usually because collection is not reliable enough to be worth sorting for. This project therefore funds the collection round first and the bins second, and it does not start until the six ward committees have agreed the round.

Safeguarding & monitoring
All field staff work under the foundation's child protection and grievance policies. Data is collected against the indicators above, reviewed twice a year with the community, and published in the annual report whether or not it is flattering.
