Remedial learning in hill schools
Daily catch-up teaching in reading and arithmetic for classes 3 to 5, running in six schools a day's travel from the district town.
Why this work
Children in these schools were sitting in class with peers two grade levels apart in reading. Teachers knew it and had no time in the timetable to fix it. Nothing about that is unusual; what is unusual is how far these schools are from any support — the nearest resource centre is a four-hour drive in dry weather.
Remedial teaching works when it is short, daily, and pitched at the child's actual level rather than the grade's. The project buys that hour inside the school day and trains the teacher already standing in the room. Fifteen months in, the reading gains are ahead of target and the arithmetic gains are behind it.

Safeguarding & monitoring
All field staff work under the foundation's child protection and grievance policies. Data is collected against the indicators above, reviewed twice a year with the community, and published in the annual report whether or not it is flattering.
