Off-grid solar for far hamlets
Household solar and shared cold storage for hamlets at the end of the line. First hamlet live since June 2026.
Why this work
These hamlets are on the grid map and off the grid in practice: supply arrived for a few hours, unpredictably, and failed for days after every serious storm. Households ran kerosene and small generators, and anything that needed cooling could not be kept.
Decentralised supply is cheaper here than extending reliable grid service, and it can be maintained locally if someone is trained and paid to do it. The project stands or falls on that maintenance arrangement rather than on the panels, which is why the tariff was agreed in each hamlet before a single system was installed.

What we will measure
Targets were set at design stage. The achieved column shows the latest verified figure, and is not adjusted when it disappoints.
Who runs it
Partners
Zonal electricity office; an installer selected by open tender in April 2026
Safeguarding & monitoring
All field staff work under the foundation's child protection and grievance policies. Data is collected against the indicators above, reviewed twice a year with the community, and published in the annual report whether or not it is flattering.
Documents
This project is running, and open to scrutiny.
We will share the full project report, expenditure statements and monitoring data with any serious enquiry, and we are content to be diligenced hard. Visits to the site can be arranged.
