Footbridges on the Tuipui crossings
Three suspension footbridges replacing crossings that were impassable for four months a year. Finished, audited and closed.
Why this work
Each of these three crossings is fordable in the dry months and not in the wet ones. Between June and September, children on the far side stopped going to school and anyone needing a health centre waited. The councils had asked for bridges for years and had been told the villages were too small to rank.
This was straightforward construction with an unusual amount of community labour, and it is the first project we have closed. We record here that it finished 7% over budget, because the second span needed deeper foundations than the survey predicted, and that we paid the difference rather than reducing the specification.

Safeguarding & monitoring
All field staff work under the foundation's child protection and grievance policies. Data is collected against the indicators above, reviewed twice a year with the community, and published in the annual report whether or not it is flattering.
